Hopes are running high for the 2014 edition of Mobile World Congress. A year after moving to a new location, exhibitors and visitors alike should have a better handle on logistics. More importantly, many trends and technologies kicked off in years past are coming to a head or evolving this year and Mobile World Congress remains the most important event – showcase, even – for signaling how the market will address these trends and market evolutions.

In particular, as our analysts head off to Barcelona, a number of key questions will be on their minds, including:

  • What does the future hold for today’s “bread-and-butter” carrier services like voice and messaging? How will Joyn, VoLTE, and WebRTC fit in?
  • Is 2014 really the year that the Internet of Things gains real traction? As one instance, which wearables are ready for prime time?
  • What’s next from the new competitive forces in mobile devices: Huawei, ZTE, and Lenovo? Does the rest of the market need to worry?
  • What does BYOD look like circa 2014? What are the favored approaches in helping customers with BYOD from vendors? From operators?
  • How real is the move towards network virtualization?
  • In an effort to grow network capacity and quality, how will priorities be balanced across small cells and LTE-Advanced?

It’s unlikely that Mobile World Congress 2014 will provide answers to all of these questions. What it will provide, however, is insight into how the industry is evolving and, in the process, how key players and upstarts are tackling these questions with service, software, and infrastructure innovations.

Join us as Current Analysis discusses the high points, low points, and everything in between from Mobile World Congress 2014. With every analytical team from Current Analysis represented, we will share what resonated, what didn’t, and which vendors, themes, and technologies “won” in Barcelona.
