Current Analysis:
Collaborative Application Marketplaces Begin to Take Shape

Analyst, Brad Shimmin, highlights the varied approaches employed by leading collaboration vendors to create complete developer platforms

Sterling, VA, USA, March 27, 2013 – Current Analysis, the market leader in continuous, tactical competitive intelligence for the telecommunications and information technology markets, announced today the release of their latest analysis on the collaborative application marketplace. Because enterprise collaboration software is most effective when integrally linked with line of business (LoB) applications, vendors have developed internal resources and external relationships capable of meeting those requirements. Within the scope of cloud-borne Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) applications, this capacity is particularly critical.

“All entrants in the collaboration platform marketplace adhere to and make full use of development standards, providing customers and partners with complete APIs and often SDKs, frameworks, libraries and even pre-built integration tools,” commented Brad Shimmin, Research Director for Business Technology and Software at Current Analysis. “This has helped developers to move well beyond typical white labeling opportunities. But that is only the beginning. Vendors are now constructing Platform-as-a-Service (PaaS) offerings that let third-party developers not just build but also host software in support of a vendor's SaaS.”

This report, written by Mr. Shimmin, provides a detailed view into the success factors for collaboration platform deployments, as well as which vendors have the fullest set of capabilities – and which ones don’t. Key findings include:

  • Successful collaboration platform deployments, particularly enterprise social network installations, demand deep integration with corporate resources such as communications software, line of business applications, content repositories, data management systems, and security governance tools.
  • Of those integrations, line of business (LoB) is paramount, particularly applications like human capital management, customer relationship management, and sales enablement.
  • Successful LoB integration requires that vendors provide a full API as well as control over the user experience (e.g., branding, navigation, etc.) itself.

Vendor platforms covered in this report include:

  • IBM SmartCloud
  • Cisco WebEx Social
  • Jive !Apps Market
  • Microsoft Windows Store and Windows Azure
  • Google Apps Marketplace
  • Salesforce.com Force.com
