Description

The Current Analysis Consumer Broadband Services - Europe (CBSE) module maps out the unfolding structure of consumer broadband services across the region. CBSE monitors ongoing product and service launches to identify and assess new business models and best practice solutions to market needs. The module also looks at the new competitors notably cable companies, utilities, ISP’s and vendors that are entering the ring with new business propositions for the bandwidth hungry consumers. CBSE reports on the important tactical and strategic developments in the marketplace, covering new services and tariffs, multi-play service strategies, channels to market and the deliberations of major players and international operators entrenched in the European market.

CBSE will also report on developments in North America and the Far East with implications for European operators. The CBSE technology focus encompasses primarily today's xDSL and cable networks as well as the longer term strategies for femtocell, WiFi, FTTx, and Wimax broadband service delivery systems, as well as related major developments in FMC and QoS technologies for the delivery of IPTV and other latency sensitive broadband services.

  • Content - Encompasses the stable diet of Internet content service providers on top of existing Internet search engines, the whole range of Google services, blog sites, social networking sites etc. These are becoming more and more multi-media and interactive. Financially it is generated by the rapid rise of Internet advertising.
  • FMC Services - Looks at consumer FMC service initiatives as they impact the broadband market segments. This includes access to DSL services on a mobile handset, Wimax delivery of wireless city broadband services. Consumer services lead the FMC push with BT Fusion and Orange Unik.
  • IPTV/Media - Looks at operator strategies for multi-channel TV programs and VoD delivery over DSL/Digital Cable/Digital terrestrial networks. There are real DSL tech issues here with QoS. Reliable IPTV is a strong telcos priority to compete with cable co's. It also enables content value-add services. Bundling with video on the mobile. HDTV and interactive TV it creates more customer loyalty.
  • Voice & Messaging - Encompasses VoIP over DSL or digital cable and PSTN over coax cable services. These services may be combined with both video conferencing, IM and presence services. Voice is a must-have for a full service provider. However, new voice service operators often face service delivery problems and customer relations failures that diminish customer loyalty.
  • Bundles - Addresses operators’ approaches to specific consumer segments with combinations of fixed, mobile, Internet access, entertainment content, messaging etc. to enhance loyalty and grow ARPU. With flat fee services gaining round operators have to launch new service or bundles to increase ARPU. This also generates new business models and service partnerships.
  • Access Technologies - The technology base is shifting fast today include RFID, UWB, Bluetooth, WiFi, Femtocell, xDSL, FTTx, WiMax & satellite. Each technology has strengths and limitations and operators together with vendors seek to mimic customers communication preferences with combinations of access technologies.
  • Channels to Market - Operators are exploring a wide range of service distribution and sales networks as broadband usage evolves both in content types and usage environments. This begins with the question who owns the customer? But it quickly ends up with the question who can bill the customer? Or who can bill other (advertising) content providers who get access to the customer.

The module also includes Company Assessments on operators such as BT, Belgacom, Deutsche Telekom, France Telecom, KPN, Telefonica, TeliaSonera, etc. as well as a host of other challengers.
