Event Summary
June 5, 2008 – Turin Networks announced new capabilities on the company’s Traverse Multiservice Transport Switch that enable the product to address the market for delivering IP and Ethernet services over copper PDH access networks. The new capabilities, which reside on a card that can be inserted into exiting Traverse chassis, is MEF-compliant and has completed IOT activities with G.8040-based EoPDH network interface devices. Turin did not announce when the cards would be generally available.
Analytical Summary
• Current Perspective: Positive on Turin Networks’ adding the ability to support Ethernet over PDH (EoPDH) interfaces to its iConnect for Carrier Ethernet solution. Because many buildings are not outfitted with fiber, advanced EoPDH capabilities are becoming a required element of next-generation backhaul solutions. To this end, this move helps Turin to address a key hurdle that carriers face in supporting a high volume of enterprise data and mobile wireless traffic in backhaul networks.
• Vendor Importance: Moderate to high to Turin, because the new EoPDH card demonstrates that Turin is filling out capabilities of the iConnect solution to keep up with market requirements. Although Turin has grown in size recently due to its acquisition of Carrier Access, the vendor remains a relatively small player compared to the giant companies that dominate the optical infrastructure market. As a smaller player, ongoing incremental improvements, such this new EoPDH gateway, are critical to proving that Turin has the wherewithal to compete with its larger rivals in terms of keeping the iConnect solution on the cutting edge of meeting carrier requirements.
• Market Impact: Moderate on the optical infrastructure market, because while competing EoPDH gateways exist, the fact that Turin’s solution can be implemented via card insert to existing Traverse optical transport systems carries some OpEx benefits that solutions relying on standalone EoPDH gateways cannot claim. In turn, this could give Turin an advantage that might make the iConnect solution more attractive in the eyes of potential customers. At the same time, Turin is not the only vendor to feature integral EoPDH support, meaning several rivals can argue that Turin’s latest move results in very little in the way of a differentiated feature set.
