Event Summary
June 17, 2008 – Tellabs has added support for radio frequency over glass (RFoG) capability to the Tellabs 1100 MSAP, enabling operators with HFC networks to leverage fiber optic technology to deliver advanced TV/video and high-bandwidth data services. The 1100 MSAP with RFoG will be available in Q2 2008. Tellabs also highlighted its number one position in the North American PON market, and announced its participation in a European Commission project called Scalable Advance Ring-based passive Dense Access Network Architecture, or SARDANA, the goal of which is to radically increase the capacity and reach of broadband networks using WDM-PON and remote amplification technology.
Analytical Summary
• Current Perspective: Neutral on Tellabs’ PON-related announcements at NXTcomm 2008, for the following reasons: 1) The incorporation of RFoG support into the 1100 MSAP is effectively a table-stakes move that all PON systems vendors will need to execute to maximize customer exposure; 2) Tellabs’ (B)PON market leadership in North America is fleeting given Verizon’s pending transition to GPON; and 3) while the company’s involvement in the European WDM-PON research project demonstrates Tellabs’ long-term commitment to FTTP technology, WDM-PON is years away from broad-scale commercial implementation.
• Vendor Importance: High to Tellabs, which because of its termination of the 8865 OLT platform several months ago (and its corollary involvement with Verizon’s GPON transition), needed to re-assert its commitment to the evolving GPON/FTTP market. To the end, RFoG expands its potential market reach, and the company’s commitment to the SARDANA project highlights its intentions in the FTTP/GPON market moving forward.
• Market Impact: Moderate on the overall FTTP/GPON market, because despite Tellabs’ recent exit from Verizon’s GPON roadmap and termination of the related 8865 product line development, the company is still a contender in the North American next-generation access market, and as indicated by its participation in the SARDANA project, Tellabs is still committed to the FTTP/GPON space.
