Event Summary
June 16, 2008 - Microsoft made its Solution for Hosted Messaging and Collaboration (HMC) Version 4.5 generally available. The offering lets carriers deploy hosted unified communications (UC), messaging and other services. HMC 4.5 uses Windows Server 2008 whose Internet Information Services 7.0 provide virtualization capabilities and enhanced security. Nortel has combined HMC 4.5 with its Communications Server 2000 Internet Protocol multimedia softswitch. BroadSoft and Sylantro plan to launch similar offerings in late 2008.
Analytical Summary
• Current Perspective: Positive on the integration of Microsoft’s Hosted Messaging and Collaboration software and Nortel’s Communication Server 2000, because it provides the basis for a new set of hosted Microsoft Office Communications Server services. Using it carriers will be able to build Microsoft-based unified communications (UC) services that are available on a subscription basis.
• Vendor Importance: Moderate to Nortel and Microsoft, because the companies are delivering on commitments previously made to provide carriers with a platform for purely (as opposed to hybrid) hosted Office Communications Server services.
• Market Impact: Moderate on the enterprise and SMB communications market, because more widespread carrier deployment of hosted UC services could disrupt the near-term adoption of premises-based UC solutions.
