Event Summary
June 17, 2008 – ADTRAN announced the addition of VDSL2 to its Total Access 1100 Series of Fiber to the Node (FTTN) DSLAMs. ADTRAN also announced that Embarq Corporation has selected ADTRAN's Total Access 5000 Multi-Service Access and Aggregation Platform for deployment in its network. This approval expands ADTRAN's reach into the Embarq network, where ADTRAN equipment is already widely deployed supporting a variety of broadband applications.
Analytical Summary
• Current Perspective: Positive on ADTRAN’s addition of VDSL2 interfaces to the Total Access 1100 series of FTTN remote DSLAMs, as well as the selection of ADTRAN’s Total Access 5000 platform by Embarq (the former local wireline access division of Sprint, and also the fourth largest telco in the U.S.). VDSL2 enables operators to deliver dramatically higher bandwidth per-subscriber than ADSLx connections, especially over short copper loops, and ADTRAN is one of the first U.S.-based access companies to market VDSL2. Also, the Embarq selection of the 5000 series provides ADTRAN with its highest-profile customer win for the company’s flagship access platform.
• Vendor Importance: Moderate to high to ADTRAN, which needed to incorporate VDSL2 support into the 1100 series to address increasing operator demand for packet-based FTTN DSLAMs in order to deliver multi-megabit “ultra-broadband” services which can support multi-stream HDTV and video applications. And while Embarq is a long-time ADTRAN customer (i.e., under the Sprint banner), up-selling the 5000 series into the Embarq account is an important win for ADTRAN given 1) Embarq’s customer base and 2) the operator’s roadmap for delivering next-generation access services.
• Market Impact: Moderate to high on the North American wireline access market, where ADTRAN still generates 90% of its revenues (and is number two in terms of DSL port shipments according to multiple sources), and where VDSL2-based services will be leveraged increasingly by telcos as they strive to compete with cable operators for the coveted triple-play/multi-play service bundle (AT&T’s U-verse service). VDSL2 has generated even more traction in the European market; as such, the 1100 series will now be even more appealing to European (and other ETSI-market) operators, where ADTRAN is actively looking to expand its customer base. The Embarq endorsement for the 5000 series is of similar impact on the North American market.
