Event Summary

February 16, 2009 – Nokia announces the May-scheduled launch of the Ovi Store. This aggregated mobile content storefront will offer targeted content based on users´ social connections and physical location. At the same time, Nokia announced its Publish.Ovi.com program to provide a fast-track publishing route for application developers.

Analytical Summary

• Current Perspective: Slightly positive on the Nokia Ovi Store, as this gives Ovi users a single, consolidated distribution channel for mobile content, replacing a number of separate entities, namely Nokia WidSets, Nokia Downloads, NGage applications and Mosh. Importantly, Ovi Store promises to be more than ´just another app store´ direct-to-consumer proposition, with potential differentiation in the areas of personalization, location and social network context, and an established billing channel with mobile operators in nine European markets.

• Vendor Importance: High to Nokia, as the Nokia Ovi Store represents a milestone product launch within Nokia´s emerging media services strategy, and will be positioned as the core content storefront going forward. Nokia is betting the house on software and services; the success of the Nokia Ovi Store is a vital part of that story.

• Market Impact: High on the mobile media services market, as Ovi Store represents a challenge to all mobile app store providers to up their games in the area of context. This event also flags up the impressive level of mobile operator buy-in for Ovi Store, importantly in the area of operator billing, and this is testament to the level of trust Nokia has been able to call on from the service provider community.
